Video Analysis

I will be looking at Warriors dance, by the prodigy. This is a concept video, as it is abstract and is dance/techno music. This video is very original, and is very abstract as it based around cigarette cases Turing human like and dancing, which has no direct link to the song. No artist is involved in this, and it is all animated around the cigarette models.
This video has hasn’t got many links between the visuals and lyrics. There is a few connections, for example ‘everybody on the dance floor’ and you see them all go and dance, however because this is a concept video there isn’t many links and connections.
However, it is very different when it comes to relationship of the music and visuals. The music and the beat is important to the video as it sets the pace and speed of the visuals. For example, the beginning when it is slow, the movements of the cigarette people starts slow as the song is starting, then as the beat gets faster so does the movements and actions of the cigarettes. The beat is the main connection with the visuals, when it slows down so does the speed of the cigarette people. This is good because the song has a fast rhythm and tempo, and if the visuals didn’t link it, in this case it wouldn’t be as effective. An example of this is when the beat slows down, half way through the song. The pace of the cigarette people also slows down a lot; almost to slow motion and the movements become bigger and exaggerated because the music is slower but has a big impact. The relation between music and visuals is important for this genre of song, because if is techno/dance, so therefore the music and the beat is the main part of the song instead of the lyrics.
The artist does not feature in this song at all, so there is no close up’s of references to them. This may be because they are a successful band and they feel like they do not need to show who they are anymore so are able to do more video’s like this to help stand out from other bands. Also, it would be hard to do a different type of video to this song, because there is so much instrumental, so for example, a narrative would have been very hard to do with the lack of relevant lyrics.
There is some links with the band, which may be because they are not directly seen. For example, the image of an ant is seen on the main cigarette pack, which is the bands logo and seen within a lot of their work. Also, by having rebellion as a main theme in this video, and the use of fire, because these are two themes which are common to this bands work.
Overall I think this is a very interesting video. It is a good example of concept, as the video hasn’t got many direct links to song within it. I think this has worked well for this band, because the video highlights all the beat and sound elements which is most of this song.
