My second potential song is a song called ‘This is me’. It is by Demi Lovato & Joe Jonas. This is a pop song, and it is quiet slow, however has a steady beat and a catchy chorus. It is taken from the Disney Film, Camp Rock. I like this song because I think that the lyrics are very effective in telling a story. I think this is a strong song to add a narrative video, and I think it shows a strong and uplifting journey about a girl’s story to find who she is. I find it quiet inspirational, as I think a video for this is a positive and supportive to young teenagers who are developing and changing. I believe that this song would be able to give a strong, teaching message to teens. It is all about being yourself and finding who are you, which I think many teens go through at this stage in their life, so it would be good to raise awareness for other teenagers. The song makes you think about issues such as insecurities and self confidence. Many teens have issues with this, so I think that it would have a big impact on the audience watching. I think that is has a strong moral, and I feel it would be very beneficial and effective to visualise this in a video. I think it could have positive effects for many people, as it shows that a even though a journey is hard sometimes, but it is worth it. Also, a strong target audience for this would be teenage girls, which I can relate to so would know what they would probably be more interested in.
For this song, I think I would focus on the female character. I would start with her personally, showing her life and personality. I would have her as a stereotypical shy, quiet, clever, overlooked girl in high school. The main topic would be about her finding herself, for example at one scene maybe being in her room and trying lots of outfits on, with different extreme e styles and makeup, showing her trying to fit in with the crowd. Through the song I would have her normal everyday life shown, her being overlooked and ignored. I would add romance into this, by having her fall for the popular boy in school, and a relationship developing between them throughout the song, then with the happy ending with her journey of self discovery and then him noticing and falling for each other. I think that a story like this will be interesting for a range of people, and would be entertaining as well as supportive and meaningful for many of the teenagers.
The only problem I would have with this song, is that all my idea’s are extremely stereotypical, so I would want to try and consider how to make it more original rather than the typical American theme of ‘geeky’ girl falling for ‘popular’ boy and having a happy ending. This is very well known and used approach which is why would want to add some originality to it, however in films and other music video’s it has been very successful in the past and proven to be liked and worth it.
Overall, I really like this song choice. I think that there is a real meaning and target to approach, and I feel that this song could be made to have an everlasting impact. I think it deals with a range of issues and themes which could be approached and shown, and I think they are quiet universal themes which will also help. I believe that song has a strong story to it, and that it will be effective to devolp a narrative around this.
